Question by A need to know: I received a retirement gift that does not work?
How do I tactfully tell a gift giver that the fountain she gave me does not work.

Best answer:

Answer by hypostatize
There’s no shame in bringing it up. It’s not saying that you don’t want it, it’s showing that you DO. Besides, they should have given you a gift receipt.

Question by : Why are Conservatives obsessed with family values, morality and work ethic?
Why do they want to force morals and manners on to children?

Why do they want to force women to be mothers?

Why do they to force men into taking responsibilities for their actions?

Why are they obsessed with teenagers (esp boys) getting jobs at 13/14?

Why do they take their children to church?

Why are they obsessed with families having breakfast, lunch and dinner together?

Why are they so opposed to divorce and abortion?

Why are they more likely to invite elderly parents to stay with them, Liberals put their parents in retirement homes.

Why are they obsessed with social grace? They force their children to dress conservatively and don’t let their daughters wear make up or short skirts, they don’t let their sons sag their pants.

Righties HATE welfare, how is someone living on welfare and spanding their days smoking pot harming you? It is their life!

Retirement should mean wondering how you found time to work

Retirement is another word for opportunity. Retirement speeches should emphasise this. That doesn’t mean, of course, that everyone sees it that way. For those who have to retire because they have been given compulsory retirement or because of ill health it is often not easy to face the future. Yet whatever reason people have for retiring it is always the start of a new way of life.

Retirees have that most precious gift, that of time. They have time to talk to their neighbours over the fence. They have time to play with their grandchildren. They have time to take trips. What a pity though that they don’t all avail of the other opportunities that are out there. A retirement speech should be motivational and say “Go out there and do something special with your life now that you have the time.”

There are all sorts of classes for instance where retirees can improve their minds, or make their bodies fitter. Adult classes don’t have to be hard work. They can be great fun depending on the subject you choose.  It can be really exciting to study something new that you have never studied before. By choosing reflexology classes for instance you can enjoy watch a class full of people enjoying getting their feet rubbed! The writer of a retirement speech should do his homework and find out just what is available locally.

There are dozens and dozens of clubs and associations anxious to welcome new members. You don’t have to spend more time at the golf club but could take up archery or join a dramatic society instead. Can you sing? If so why not join a choir or take part in a musical?  Maybe you would like to meditate or do a class in theology? A good retirement speech will make the retiree think of all the options available to him or to her.

If the retiree is giving a speech he or she will probably be in reflective mood. Undoubtedly he or she should speak of the friends made at work and the enjoyment the job gave. He or she may have to thank a colleague for helping or indeed all those who contributed to a farewell gift. The speaker may tease those who will still have to face the rush hour traffic while he or she is playing golf or enjoying meeting friends.

Retirement speeches should convey the message that retirement is about having time to do all those things you’ve always promised yourself you will do.

Work From Home For Seniors

The potential of working from home for seniors is being completely overlooked. So many people retire before they want to because of having reached a certain age. Their minds are as good as ever, their bodies, with modern day science are lasting a lot longer, but the discrimination is still there in the work force.

What we all have to do, is to get out there and show them. How would you like in a couple of years from now to meet the young trendy who helped you on your way to your early retirement and be able to tell him….Well no need be rude, just wave your bank balance and smile.

I have been doing voluntary work in a local computer centre. My experience has been that, the more mature clients are reluctant even frightened to come in and talk about learning the computer. You can not blame them, young kids at school are so proficient and it all looks so difficult you think. WRONG.

I decided to offer a home visit voluntary help plan, where the client worked on their own computer and did not have to brave the teeny boppers. It really worked well. One lady at 78 had just lost her husband of 46 years and was suffering badly with loneliness and depression. Now she has joined a writing club which meets once a month. She types out all her stories on the computer and this year has had a Story and a Poem published. I had found her standing outside the door of the computer center too frightened to come in.

Does this sound like you if so stay tuned?

What I am suggesting and am proving by doing is that there is a world out there waiting to be conquered by you. How do the words, Redundant, Put off, Retired, Old, Pensioner, and etc sound? To you? Do any of these word ring a bell?

As in all business there is an investment, NOW do not switch off, it is not a lot of money and can be paid out gradually. Were you planning to take it with you? Do you want to be leaving all your hard earned saving to little Harry, who no doubt is already making more than you did and living in a better street etc etc.

No of course not. So upwards and onwards first things first.

You need a computer? It does not have to be a new one; I found a beauty for 0 completely set up by a guy who specializes in refurbishing them. You need access to the internet; they do senior rates if you check around. And next you need a quite spot to start.

At this stage if you have never even pushed the On button, sign up for a course for over 50s at a local Adult Education or similar Institution. They are invaluable, you are being given basic tuition by an expert and believe it or not when I went I was the oldest in the class. I also came away with the best mark at the end of the term. Why? Not because I was the brightest, but mainly because I was not there to PLAY and waste my time, and had a lot of life experience. A very much undervalued commodity.

Second part of plan

Now that you can find the On button, how to use the mouse etc and were to find the spell check you can start.

By the way at this point all the previous input should have been Fun Yes FUN, No point in doing something you are not enjoying. Go away now and find something else.

But for the ones, who want to make some money, love the computer and like keeping there mind in top gear lets proceed.

Do not worry if you can not type .Absolutely not needed. I just type away make lots of mistakes and then go to the top tool bar and find spell check. This does all the work for you at half the time of checking it yourself.

You are now ready to start your exciting journey of Internet Home Marketing. I am not offering a gold mine at the end of the week, it takes time and effort but it is so interesting. If you are like me, you will not be able to wait to get up in the morning and check on all the information that has arrived while you were asleep. Check in next week for the next Blog.

Question by the_thought_occurs: I work in a retirement facility, some residents are Diabetic and my boyfriend is also……?
this one resident is Diabetic and drinks a glass of apple juice or 2 with dinner. He has not drank the juice last couple of days and has water. I want to add he is very overweight and always sits in a Scooter, his wife always gets on him to eat less sweets after dinner. I’ve talked to him about my bf and his eating habits and all. I don’t know what kind of medication the resident is on, but he is all of the sudden worried about his apple juice intake. I’ve worked there 2 years, and this couple knows me very well, I don’t want to him the wrong thing so I asked my bf. He said it depends on the medication. I’m working tomorrow and will see the resident, any advice???? Thank you
I would just like to add this……….I would never risk my job and tell this resident something I really know little about! I serve the residents food, we have a nurse there Mon-Fri. Thank you all for the advice and information.

Question by Sidney: Fired over video on You Tube. My son was recently let go after recording a retirement party at work.?
He didn’t know prior to the event that the person that was retiring after 27 years was going to recieve a “Apple Pie” as a gift from the company for her years of service. He put it on You Tube because he thought the persons reaction to the gift was hilarious. When the company got wind of it they terminated him. They said he showed their customers how they treat their employees. In his letter they said that he lied in order to save his job since he didn’t admit to it, that it was done on company time but all retirement dinners in the past and after the fact have been on company time. Does anyone know if he has any legal grounds for action against this company. He had an excellant work record with them. Others lied during the investigation and they still have their jobs but everybody in the video was repriminded I think for making derogtory remarks against the company. I feel the video just showed the truth, the company was in the wrong and the person should have recieved a nice gift.

Never embarrass your boss, rule 18
Maybe the threat of legal action might help, depends on the size and structure of the company

Retirement — Why it Doesn’t Work

It’s hard to pick up a newspaper or turn on the television today without hearing someone talking about “planning for retirement”. It’s the “holy grail” of earning money, isn’t it? The ability to be able to stop working and sit down and rest for awhile. Refreshing, isn’t it?

Wrong.

It’s a flawed concept from the start. It’s an outdated concept from the early Industrial Revolution when employers told laborers, “Hey, if you’ll work for me for 40 hours a week for 40 years…then you can quit and get a gold watch and a pension.”

That plan hasn’t worked since the 1950′s. It probably didn’t work for your mom and dad and it’s definitely not going to work for you, either.

Here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to. I’m not saying that you have to work ’til you die. I’m saying that the concept of deferring your life’s pleasures until you’re 60+ years old is STUPID.

Consider Timothy Ferriss’ perspective from his wonderful book, “The Four Hour Workweek”:

There are at least three good reasons why the concept of “retirement” is flawed:

1. It is predicated on the assumption that you dislike what you’re doing during the most physically capable years of your life. [Tony's comments: This is already an impossible situation. There is no logical reason in the world why anyone would choose to do something they dislike for 50+ years.)

2. Most people will never be able to retire and maintain even a hotdogs-for-dinner standad of living. Even one million dollars is chump change in a world where traditional retirement could span 30 years and inflation lowers your purchasing power 2-4% per year. The math doesn't work. The golden years become a replay of lower-middle-class. That's a pretty bittersweet ending, isn't it?

3. And if the math DOES work, it means you are one ambitious, hardworking machine. If that's the case, guess what? One week into retirement, you'll be so damned bored that you'll want to stick bicycle spokes into your eyes. You'll probably wind up starting a new company. Or taking another job. Kinda defeats the purpose of waiting, doesn't it?

So, what am I (and Ferriss) saying? That you shouldn't aspire to have a life where you can relax and do as you please? Not at all!

On the contrary, my point is that you should begin living that life NOW. How much sense does it make to work hard for 40+ years so that -- when you're 60+ years old -- you can finally start doing the things you want to do?

Life is not a dress rehearsal. Start living yours today
