Question by helmutt: Do you think Brett just ‘forgot’ to mention my name on his thank you list for the retirement speech?
I told him he should have written stuff down…

Oh well.
Or do you think i should get mad at him?

I could always give him the silent treatment…

Question by Dragonfly girl ~ Haley is 1: Are thank you cards necessary for birthday party gifts?
I have always felt that thank you cards are proper etiquette for any party, whether it be baby shower, wedding shower, birthday party, graduation gifts, retirement gifts whatever. But I am shocked at some of the answers from one of my contacts questions. Some of them have said that it’s only necessary to thank the person to their face, but not send a card. I’ve always thanked the person in person and also sent a card later on…is our culture getting away from proper etiquette these days…I mean I can’t even get rsvp’s from people anymore?

I heartily agree with you. If someone took the time to look for a gift, wrap and present it, the least the receiver can do is to sit down and write a nice thank you note. Thanking someone ‘to their face’ is a beginning, but how about some effort and a hand-written note?

I have given gifts to nieces and nephews (some rather expensive, too) and received no thank you note at all. Some were wedding gifts (like handmade quilts!)

My rule now is- No thank you notes = no more gifts!

Military Retirement Gifts Say Thank You in a Very Big Way

Retirement is a time for celebration. It is the start of a new chapter in someone’s life, but it’s also time to recognize their service and dedication. Military retirement gifts provide the recipient with a memento of their service and sacrifice. When choosing such a gift, there are few things to keep in mind. Consider the following:

Most soon-to-be military retirees have a multitude of mixed feelings about their upcoming retirement date. Their years of military service have defined a large portion of who they really are. Retirement can often be bittersweet. Some may not want to retire, while others can’t wait. If you know which category your loved one falls within, it can make it much easier to choose appropriate military gifts.

Here’s an example. For someone who is rather disappointed to be leaving the military, a traditional gift may be best. Plaques highlighting their military branch, division, or specialized unit are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. You can add an emblem or insignia of their highest rank, along with the dates of their military service. These personalized plaques are a beautiful way to thank a retiring military member for all that they have done through their career.

You also may want to consider shadowboxes or display cases, engraved desk sets, or a beautiful throw blanket with and emblem of the branch of the military he or she is retiring from. These are the types of military retirement gifts that the recipient can proudly display in their home or next office.

For someone who is ready to spend the next several years doing something other than reporting for duty, you may want to consider a little less traditional gift. Perhaps an embroidered hat with their unit or branch for those days they will spend relaxing. A T-shirt with the military emblem or specialized unit is a good idea, as is an embroidered jacket. Beautifully engraved bar sets, a military ring, or a personalized belt buckle with an emblem special to the recipient are all fantastic military retirement gifts. You don’t have to feel as though you must get a gift that has to hung or displayed on a home or office wall. You can find a gift that exemplifies their service, sacrifice, and dedication without proclaiming it to the world.

However, you’ll find on a handful of military personnel that won’t be very receptive of an upcoming retiring party. They’ve worked very hard in every aspect of their career. They have spent years defending this country. It’s time they were recognized for that service. While some may feel it was their duty to serve, you want them to understand that you know of their sacrifices. You want to express your gratitude. The right choice of military retirement gifts helps you do so in great style.

In closing, there are a number of different gift ideas for someone who is retiring. Take a bit of time to think about their person behind the uniform. Perhaps the perfect military retirement gift is easier to find that you might think!

Inexpensive Party Favors are Great Thank You Gifts

Having a beach bash, birthday party, retirement party, bridal shower, graduation, wedding or some other event? Don’t forget to thank your guests for celebrating the occasion with you. What better way to say thank you than to choose inexpensive party favors for your guests to take with them when they leave the party.

Many people, when they think of party favors, think of sitting around the kitchen table stuffing party bags. How boring is that? Usually, the same old candy, mints or confetti end up in the favor bag and the people receiving them really don’t care if they get one or not. Make your party extra special by giving your guests a party favor they will really want to receive. Party favors these days are very nice and many are less than or even less than each.

Choosing a party favor that matches the party theme is the easiest way to go. For a summer beach bash or 4th of July party, choose party favors that shout SUMMER. Inexpensive beach theme party favors are perfect for this type of event and include flip flop magnets and margarita gel candles. Many people do not expect party favors at summer picnics so be sure to surprise them with a nice memento to remind them of this fun day!

For a fall event such as a wedding, retirement party, birthday party, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Quince or more, choose a party favor that incorporates all the beautiful colors of the season such as chocolate brown, burgundy and gold. These colors are available with so many inexpensive fall party favors such as bookmarks, favor boxes, and photo frames. Many favors are not only lovely, but practical too and also would be nice used as place card holders at the Thanksgiving table.

Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s Eve are just a few of our favorite winter reasons to have a party. Match your party favor to this fun time of year by selecting snowman candles, snowflake ornaments or a beautiful blue gel candle with a snowflake on it. These are great inexpensive favors for winter birthday parties too. And did we mention winter weddings? Some of the most gorgeous weddings are held during the winter months creating a winter wonderland for the bride and groom. Any snowflake party favor would be the perfect party favor for this type of event.

All things begin anew in spring. For events such as Bridal Showers, Weddings, First Communions, Baptisms and other spring happenings, select wildflower seed favors, floral party favors or butterfly favors or ladybug favors to give your guests at this time of year. These favors are also great all year round for a birthday party, Sweet 16 party, Quince party and more.

All of the party favors mentioned above cost less than each and many less than each. How can you afford not to thank your guests with these inexpensive party favors? To be double sure your guests love your party favor, choose one that you yourself would like to receive!

Go to a craft shop and buy the basics.
Card blanks
glue
some nice papers or card
floral decorations or buttons

get a pair of scissors decide on a colour scheme, cut, glue and assemble. There are loads of books, web sites and info out there. You could also buy a card making programme for your PC, for that you would also need a reasonable printer.
