Question by p: What do I do about establishing a retirement fund?
My employer doesn not offer 401K. I also have student loan debt and credit cards that I’m working on payingn down. Should I pay those off before worrying about investing? Is an IRA the best choice for me? I am almost 30 and feel I should start worrying about my retirement.

Best answer:

Answer by judithlynn0337@sbcglobal.net
Take it from a retiree – You are never too young to start a retirement account. An IRS is a great idea; contact your bank about it. 401Ks can be bad news! A friend of mine lost $ 30,000 in one year because of a drop in the economy. After he lost money the 2nd year he withdrew everything & placed most of it into an IRA. If I had saved for just $ 1000 extra per month, I would have had enough money to do more than meet current expenses. Don’t let this happen to you.

Some people always have bills. Pay what you can into the ira now & increase the amt as you can. Your banker can advise you as to what % of your income would be wise to invest.

Answer by Happiness Starship
Other. I think every retirement gift should be chosen especially for the person who is retiring, not just a rubber-stamp retirement-so-we-always-give-them-a-crystal-bowl sort of choice. A more practical gift might well be more acceptable: what about some padded loungers for the garden?

Retirement speeches should be about get up and go!

Retirement speeches should be positive. They should look to the future and what it may bring. That is not to say, of course, that they should not mention the past. Someone who is retiring has a past with a particular company and that should be mentioned and celebrated.

Over the years a retiree will usually have made many good friends. Leaving the company then may make him or her feel lonely, as though they he or she were losing those friendships. A colleague or boss who is addressing the retiree should bear that in mind and perhaps make some suggestions as to staff re-unions or other ways to keep in touch. He or she should also bear in mind that the retiree was a skilled member of the workforce and that what he or she says will help that retiree leave proud of his or her achievements. It is worth remembering too that a generic “John was an excellent worker” is not enough. He should find out what John’s speciality was and mention that. It is good too of course to mention how the retiree’s personality added to the ambiance in the company. If a boss does his research properly he/she may find that in thirty years John was never late or never failed to send a letter to someone who had a bereavement. John may have been an expert on cars and helped fellow workers choose the ideal model for them. Whatever the retiree’s contribution was it should be mentioned?

A retirement speech should also look to the future and mention John’s plans if they are known. If they are a secret then perhaps it would add to the fun of the occasion if some suggestions were made as to what John could do in the future. If his family are present it is polite to know the names of his wife and children and to say how much John has spoken of them. Alternatively you could mention the photos he has of his grandchildren who are without doubt the most wonderful grandchildren in the world!

On the other hand if John wishes to speak he should express his thanks to those who helped his career, mention his particular friends and speak of his future plans, plans that don’t include getting up at 5.30a.m. every morning. He might mention that instead of that awful commute to work every morning he is going to go cruising instead. His speech should be gracious, light-hearted and, like all retirement speeches should say that the future is unexplored territory just waiting to be discovered.

The Facts About Retiring in Thailand

When many people retire, they just stop working and continue to live where they currently are. This is not for me. I live in Hawaii and have been here for 23 years and love the islands, but I don’t want to retire here.

The cost of living in Hawaii is not conducive to retirement living unless you have a ton of money. I have a nice nest egg, a pension coming and a military retirement, but I don’t want to struggle with day to day living in Hawaii.

I prefer to live in a country where it will take about 25% of what it costs me now to live. That place is Thailand.

I have been stationed there as a soldier, participated in military exercises there, and take two or three vacations in Thailand every year. It is my personal paradise and where I will spend my golden years.

If you have ever visited Thailand and been to Bangkok, Pattaya, or Phuket, you will think I am crazy saying that you can retire for 0 per month. But, keep in mind that living in Thailand permanently is different than being there for a two or three week vacation.

During a vacation you tend to spend all of the money that you saved up over the year and have a great, blow-out holiday. If you live in Thailand, you won’t be going out bar-hopping and just throwing your money around like you do on vacation. Plus, if you live in a place, you tend to know the places to get the best deals and prices.

As I’ve gotten older and have a lady that I see in Thailand, I don’t have the need to go out as much. We still go out for dinners and shopping and site-seeing, but I spend a lot less than when I am in Pattaya on a single man’s holiday.

My last trip I spent three weeks in Khon Kaen, northeast of Bangkok. My hotel room was basic and cost about 12 dollars per day. My lady would cook breakfast for me and then pick up some goodies from the local street vendors for my lunch. We would go out for dinner and have three or four plates of food, a couple of beers, and some water.

My daily expense for this was about . This is for meals and my room. Granted, I spent a little more when we went out shopping and I also saved a bit by drinking beer in my room instead of bar-hopping. Movies were bought at the mall for and watching a movie in the room, drinking a beer, and having a pizza was cheap entertainment.

Once I retire in Thailand, I will buy a house, so the hotel bill is gone. My soon-to-be wife will be able to cook for us in the house and we won’t go out for meals as much. We will still go out, but it won’t be every night.

Even if you don’t own a house, getting a monthly rental in a city away from the touristy areas will still be cheap. Getting by on less than a day is easy unless you are out in the bars and clubs every night.

I recommend that you visit Thailand and see what this beautiful country has to offer and see if it is the right place for you to retire.

Question by lilygray2: Can anyone translate ‘ Happy retirement’ in Gaelic/Scottish? Has Robert Burns written a poem about retirement?

Best answer:

Answer by MacJedi
I knae nae Gaelic, but there is a site that will translate it for you for free (they say…)

http://www.irishgaelictranslator.com/

As far as I know Burns didn’t write about retirement, which is a pretty recent concept, historically. People didn’t really retire in the 18th century – they simply got too old to work.

That said, though, there are a few poems, such as Nature’s Law or Prospect of Death, that you might be able to take a few stanzas from that would work.

Sounds like fun!

Question by vela110808: How do I go about starting a small event planning business?
I now work in the entertainment industry working as the Facilities Assistant. When it comes to planning parties and company events everyone in the office loves how the events turn out. I always get compliments on the dinner parties my husband and I have and everyone thinks I need to do a career change. I love planning social events and could really see myself planning small wedding, dinner parties, retirement dinner, anniversaries etc. but I have no idea how to start a business. If there are any entrepreneurs out there please lend some advice. Thanks in advance!

Best answer:

Answer by G-Stone
A working plan that you specifically design explores your market and your business structure. Many people skip this step, yet if you haven’t surveyed all your options, you may miss out! We like to plan and organize social events, yet the first thing to organize is your business operations. Sound unexciting? Well, perhaps—-yet put your “creative nature” aside for a minute and assume a “business” stance.

For example, do you limit it to only small events? Only parties? Will you branch out to all-occasion events? You may only want to target one service area, yet branching out into other avenues (i.e. sales) may assist in producing additional revenue for you. Does your targeted market call for a specialized coordination? Do you want to set up a small store front? Do you go into partnership with a friend or family member or go solo? How will your set up your business records? These are a few things I have on a very long list to consider when developing your working plan. Your “hobby turned business” must turn a profit or why do this? Thinking like a “business-minded” person, channels your goal which is – making money with your talents. Every town has a need and the trick is to find what is needed and be the best. Find your place in this growing market. The idea is to find the niche in the market for your area that has a gap. If children’s birthday parties are in need of someone to offer this as a service, then that might work best. Perhaps you desire to be the coordinator for Open House Celebrations, Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies for new businesses or even Note Burning Ceremonies when the debt is being paid off. You can work with the visitor’s bureau in your area and make contact with businesses and non-profit organizations. How about catering a chocolate fountain or “candy store” with several crystal bowls full of candy only be be scooped up with a silver scoop! But most important of all is look into a Solid business plan in that field from a book store like Borders and get tips from a mentor in the business and live the dream girl the only person standing in your way is you )
