Weekly Poems: A Poem About Death and More

YEARS TURN THE PAGES; THE BOOK REMAINS

Years turn the pages; the book remains.
No one can see the life it contains.
The story is over; it sits on a shelf
Outside of time, complete in itself.
Ah! Could we know! But never we will.
Now it is sealed, silent and still.

CHRISTMAS REALLY ISN’T ABOUT TOYS

Christmas really isn’t about toys,
However much we love them, young and old.
Reductions in the fat of Christmas day
In time restore its vigor and its health.
So let us not display our absent wealth,
Though children should have ample chance to play.
More sweet and joyous music must be sung,
And thoughts of peace and mercy make their way
Silent and uncluttered through the noise.

CHRIS AND I WENT OUT AWHILE BACK

Chris and I went out awhile back.
It didn’t work–I really don’t know why.
Some unacknowledged dream was out of whack,
Went spinning off, and so we let it die.
Sometimes we attribute things to fate
When it’s us, though we won’t notice it.
Chris and I are back again–it’s great!
We’ve both changed, and now we seem to fit.
I can’t explain the happiness I find:
Chris smiles at me and something makes me glow.
Mysteries on mysteries unwind;
The deeper in we see, the less we know.
For now I think I’ll just enjoy the ride;
Love Chris to bits, but still keep watch inside.

HAPPINESS DEPENDS ON LIGHTING LIGHTS

Happiness depends on lighting lights,
As what one does without reflects within.
People plead the poignance of their plights,
Pleased to play the hapless harlequin.
Yet one must purify the sacred temple,
Haul the lamps up, clean them, set them out,
Acting to await the miracle,
Neither seized by fear nor free of doubt.
Underneath all miracles is faith,
Knowing not, but hoping what might be,
Kindled by the will, though pain and death
Assault with darkness all that one can see
Here, where all is here miraculously.

HAPPINESS IS RARELY MELODY

Happiness is rarely melody
As other voices jockey for the lead.
Perhaps it is most comfortable with bass,
Pleased to underline the others’ grace,
Yielding to intensity and need,
Holding up a fragile harmony.
On holidays, however, it becomes
Less self-effacing, stepping forth to sing,
In moments filled with labor, love, and longing,
Deep descants on the beauty of belonging;
After which, again retiring,
Yet not before the harried heart takes wing,
Softly it blends into what strain comes.

SHOW ME ALL THE BOUNTY OF YOUR GIVING

Show me all the bounty of your giving:
Each cornucopia spills out in vain
As some of the sweet happiness of living
Sinks deep into a dry and dusty plain.
Of labor and of love there is no ending,
Nor can we ever pocket our reward.
Some tender that we’re tempted into spending
Goes for gifts that others can’t afford.
Remember that the Earth’s a single sea,
Equable in what one takes and gives.
Each act redeems its value naturally,
Taking grace from everything that lives.
In giving there is rich and varied treasure,
Nor more nor less than taking’s vivid pleasure,
Granting ample joy to those who care,
Subject to what pain they choose to share.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! TO THOSE WHO WILL HAVE NONE

Happy New Year! To those who will have none,
A wish that knows too well it cannot be.
Perhaps one ought not wish so futilely;
Perhaps one ought, that such not be alone.
Yearning is the price one pays for hope,
Nor can one hope unless one would endure.
Each futile wish makes paradise more sure,
Widening the world’s supernal scope.
Yet there are those who find such wishes cheap,
Easy substitutes for sacrifice.
A wish for good is more than merely nice,
Restoring winds that stir the unguent deep.

Planning for Your Retirement on a Budget

Retirement budgeting may seem like an impossible task. However, cheap retirement options are out there. Affordable retirement budget alternatives and ways to choose the best retirement places take some planning, but the rewards are worth it.

Cheap Retirement Alternatives

Cheap retirement alternatives to consider include continuing to work well past retirement age. That may not sound that appealing, but consider this: a change in careers to something that’s always intrigued you can enrich your twilight years and make them more enjoyable. Instead of creating a cheap retirement plan that includes clipping coupons or staying in the house where you’ve always lived, consider a move to a new retirement community and a new career, too.

Affordable Retirement Is Possible

It’s possible to have an affordable retirement that’s enjoyable, too. The newest retirement communities have neighborhoods of homes where independence reigns supreme. These communities also offer assistance for their residents for grocery delivery or in-home health care needs. Other affordable retirement communities provide more or less assistance and involvement by the staff. If you’re budgeting for retirement, using an airline credit card or a rewards credit card to pay for retirement expenses can help. These cards offer seniors a way to earn rebates, rewards or free travel for using their cards to pay for everyday expenses. Rewards credit cards often offer double points or miles for grocery shopping or paying household bills. The points can be used to purchase airline tickets to visit loved ones or to get cash back or gift certificates.

Best Retirement Places Offer Fun And New Friends

Some of the most meaningful advice I’ve heard about choosing the best retirement place was actually pretty simple. Choose a neighborhood that’s filled with lively, fun people if you’re a social person. If you have a tendency towards being a hermit, then the best retirement places just have to be beautiful or otherwise suit your solitary needs. However, if you enjoy the company of others, a beautiful view outside your window will get boring very quickly. The best retirement places have a wealth of activities for seniors and a fun and engaged community.

Tips for a Debt Free Retirement

Whether your retirement seems decades away or just around the corner, it is something we have dreamed about at one point in our lives.

Have you had the daydream where you give that final notice and within weeks are on a plane to somewhere tropical to start your vacation for the rest of your life?

Also known as the “golden years,” retirement might not seem so golden if you find yourself with a mortgage to pay off, medical insurance, auto loans, country club expenses and the cost of living.

Typically, retirement means that you will need less money since your professionally expenses (lunch, clothing, parking, gas, etc.) are now eliminated. However you need to consider that there are other expenses that just might take their place.

It has been estimated that the average American is going to require around 70% of their income earned (in the peak years) for their retirement fund. So let’s say you were making ,000 a year, now you are going to need about ,000 in retirement to survive. This may seem like a lot, but take a few things into consideration.

Your medical expenses are going to be higher now because you are older. Now that you are not working, your insurance from your employer is gone. So lets look at a family (of two for example) might have a co-pay of to , well their monthly medical expenses could be up to 00.

Think about all the free time that comes with retirement. You know that has made its way into your dreams, heading out for a 10am tee time or brunch with the girls. The leisure expenses can add up as well.

While working, your monthly expenses probably include a mortgage, insurance, automobile payment and insurance, utilities, food and credit cards.

Some of these expenses will carry over into your retirement. Think insurance, utilities and food, things that you pretty much need to live. Now there are expenses that you can pay off and live without, like the credit cards, mortgage and auto loans. This should be your main priority to focus on before retirement so you can start off debt free.

Credit cards are probably your worst enemy. Start there and get it out of your life. You absolutely do not want to enter retirement with credit card debt and if you do, work now to minimize that debt. Managing your debt has become a huge problem for Americans. Approximately 30 million Americans are struggling with bad credit and that is usually due from credit cards.

Take the time now to analyze your debts. Come up with a plan to get out of debt and pay off all of your credit cards. You will be happy you did.

If you still have an automobile loan or loans, try to get it paid off before retirement. Next to credit card debt, you really don’t want to have a car payment at this point in life. Of course you need a car (think of all that free time that comes with retirement) just make sure to come up with another plan to pay off that car in full as well.

Now for the biggest expense in your life, the mortgage. Of course you need a place to live. That is unavoidable. If you start now, and make extra mortgage payments every year then you will be working to get rid of it. Let’s say you are paying 00 a month, at the end of the year send them an extra 00. Or you could break that up into smaller payments each month.

If you have a 30 year loan this method can reduce your mortgage term down to 23 years. Once you have paid the mortgage off that will eliminate your biggest expense, and in the future if you absolutely have to, you can take out a reverse mortgage.

Just remember that a lot of parents will start saving for their kids education before getting out of debt. Keep in mind that your children actually have a stronger earning potential than you do! Your ability to work in this fast-paced, quickly changing world with a high paying job is not as likely as your children.

Also, a good credit rating at this point is really important because you want to be able to use that towards any credit application in the event of emergencies. Getting rid of your debts before retirement will guarantee that you are in good standing.

Debt relief is available for those who need it. If you want to settle your debts before entering into retirement, there are companies who can help. They can negotiate on your behalf and before you know it, you will be on your way to financial freedom. After that, you will be living in retirement, not only stress-free, but debt-free as well.

Question by polyana28: What activities can I plan to make a retirement party memorable?
My dad’s boss and I are planning a large retirement/55th birthday party for him. We are planning for a large group of about 75 people. It will be a surprise party. Dad is a fisherman, so I’ve decided to have a fish fry and go with a “gone fishing” theme. I’ve found plenty of party favors and decorations, but I’d really like to get the guests involved.

I think it would be hard to play games with that many people. I’d like to try to have some activities that are fun and funny that will make the party truly memorable. Dad is not a sentimental person, I don’t think he’d care too much about a scrapbook and I know he won’t watch a videotape. I’d really appreciate any suggestions you can offer! Many thanks.
